face2face – the coolest app I was working on

// July 7th, 2010 // No Comments » // technology

face2face for iPhone

As you might know, I have been developing/designing face2face, the mobile application that uses proximity based social networking technology to combine and organize existing social networks so we can know when our friends from social and business networks —and friends of our friends—are nearby, to connect with them in that moment.

Now that Proximate Global Inc has launched face2face in Pakistan, I wanted to encourage you to check it out, share this with your friends and family and of course feel free to post the application to your Facebook page.

Please let us know your thoughts, and of course we’ll be keeping an eye on our social networks to see if we can meet “face to face” soon :)

You can download face2face for your smartphone at http://face2face.ws/

[re-post] A (proper) Pakistani Flag!

// August 4th, 2009 // No Comments » // default

It’s amazingly awful to see so many different versions of the Pakistani flag that it makes me sick! Sick to the core of my soul that why we do not respect the very flag!??

I have seen many funny versions of different variations like

  • Various shades of green (even pink and blue! – for god’s sake!).
  • Slogans and other text with/around the crescent and star.
  • Different dimensions
  • Varied versions of crescent and star

I think there should only be one version that we should be using wherever we use!

Here’s what a PROPER Pakistani flag should be (technically):

“A dark green rectangular flag in the proportion of length and width 3:2 with a white vertical bar at the mast, the green portion bearing a white crescent in the centre and a five-pointed white heraldic star. The size of the white portion being one-fourth the size of the flag, nearest the mast, the remainder three-fourths being dark green. The dimensions of the crescent and star are obtained as follows:

“Draw the diagonal from the top right hand corner to the bottom left corner of the green portion. On this diagonal establish two points ‘A’ and ‘B’. Point ‘A’ at a distance equidistant from top right and bottom left hand corners of the green portion, i.e. the centre of the green portion. Point ‘B’ at a distance from the top right hand corner equal to 13/20th the width of the flag. With centre point ‘A’ and radius 1.1/4th the width of the flag describe a second arc. The enclosures made by these two arcs form the crescent. The dimensions of the five-pointed white heraldic star are determined by drawing a circle 1/10th the width of the flag. The circle surrounds the five points of the heraldic star. The star lies with one point on the diagonal at a point where the larger arc of the crescent, if completed, cuts the diagonal.”

The Interior Ministry of Pakistan provides dimensions for flags in different circumstances:

* For ceremonial occasions. 21′ x 14′, 18′ x 12′, 10′ x 6-2/3′ or 9′ x 6 1/4.
* For use over buildings. 6′ x 4′ or 3′ x 2′.
* For cars 12″ x 8″.
* For tables 10 1/4″ x 8 1/4″.

According to CSS Color Module Level 3 darkgreen code used for HTML/CSS named color has the value

darkgreen
HEX: #006400
RGB: 0,100,0

I’ve uploaded a proper flag in different file formats for ease of use. Feel free to download and re-distribute them:

Q: GREEN or BLACK?

// August 4th, 2009 // No Comments » // default

I asked this within my social network:

Q: Whether to go GREEN and celebrate this day of independence or go BLACK and mourn for the happenings in the country?

And here are a few responses:

Go green… its always a good idea to celebrate the good around you…

Ur Mourning alone wont change things anyhow… so celebrate the good u got!

Go Mixture of Green&Black both,
Celebrate independence & pray for what’s happening in Country

Sir, if u are taking suggestion then I tell u

GREEN DAY…………………………………

Always be optimistic.

These days bring happiness for those who are facing these problems, if they miss these days then there is no hope for them, these days gives them some happiness

So, celebrate Green Day as Independence Day.

HAPPY INDEPENDNCE DAY…..

There’s been enough mourning for things happening around anyway and it’s an agony that whether or not we mouth it, we all know there’s lots more to come. So why not, for a change go green for a day at least.. I say we celebrate and in cool spirits n enjoy till it lasts!

Go black! We don’t have any right to celebrate the independence when we did nothing to deserve it. While our lifestyle may be of an independent nation, our minds are certainly not independent and “azaad” from external influence.

GO BLACK!!

celebrate, and celebrate together, celebration for all, its time to unite, and unity only occurs in celebration.

GREEN because it gives us hope for a better future. And hope prevails all!

Go green AND work on social issues

[re-post] Who washed out the colors of my green flag?

// August 3rd, 2009 // 1 Comment » // default

Pakistani Flag (Washed Out Colors)

who washed out the colors of my green flag?
the white is smudged…
the star is shine less the crescent is dull…
it’s bruised and edgy…
it looks pale and gray…

who washed out the colors of my green flag?
the terrorists make up the new generation…
the victims are minority…
who once were the nation…

who washed out the colors of my green flag?
the flowers used to smell sweeter
the birds used to sing freer

now all i hear is noise ..
of people, TV and paper…

i see the green on my hands
i see the green on your hands

did I wash out the colors of my green flag?
did you wash out the colors of my green flag?

A peek in the past… Can you remember it all?

// July 30th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // default

Close your eyes… and go back in time…

Before the Internet, VCD and DVD.

Before semi-automatics machine guns, joyriders and crack.

Before SEGA or Super Nintendo or Video Games.

Way back…

I’m talking about hide and seek (Chhupan Chhupaee) in the park or on the streets. The corner shop, Butter Scotch Candy, Mitchells Milk Toffee, Jubilee.

Football with an old can, hockey, cricket and Pitthu with the same ball.

Jumping in enormous puddles, building dams.

The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass.

Mayfair bubble gum, Gaiee (cow) wali candy.

A POLKA ice cream pop cone on a warm summer night.

Wait… watching Weekday 5pm evening or Saturday Morning cartoons… short commercials, The Tom and Jerry, He-Man, Captain Caveman, Waltron, Walligator, Danger Mouse and Pink Panther.

Staying up late for Night Rider, Air Wolf or Power of Methew Star.

Watching nice Urdu Plays like Un Kahi, Tanhaiyaan, Sunehray Din, Aangan Terha.

Walking to school, no matter what the weather.

Running till you were out of breath.

Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.

Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.

Climbing trees, having gola ganda stealing unripe mangoes (Karrie) from the neighbour’s tree.

Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for the giggles.

Being tired from playing…

Remember that? The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.

I’m not finished just yet… Eating raw jelly, orange squash, ice pops.

Remember when… You knew everyone in your street – and so did your parents!

It wasn’t odd to have two or three “best” friends.

You didn’t sleep a wink on EiD Chaand Raat.

When 100 Rs. was decent pocket money.

When you’d get a coke for 4Rs. There was a mini coke/pepsi version too.! !!!!!!

When nearly everyone’s mum was at home when the kids got there from School.

It was magic when dad would “remove” his thumb.

When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner! At real restaurant with your parents. Bandoo Khan, Snoopy, Snack 77, Alpha were ultimate !!!!!.

We were in fear for our lives, but it wasn’t because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! And some of us are still afraid of them!!!

Didn’t that feel good? Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!

Remember when…. Decisions were made by going “eeny- meeny-maainaa- mo.”

“Race issue” meant arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in “Monopoly”.

The worst thing you could catch from other person was germs, and the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to opposite sex.

Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a catapult.

Nobody was prettier than your Mom. Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.

Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin.

Ice cream was considered a basic food group.

Getting a foot of snow! was a dream come true.

Abilities were discovered because of a “double-dare”.

Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most of these, then you have LIVED!!!

Pop singer Michael Jackson has died after being found unconscious at his home in Los Angeles.
FRIDAY, JUNE 26, 2009

I’ve grown up listening him… he was and will always be “THE Michael Jackson” … thriller in all of our lives…

It’s not just a cup, it’s a statement…

// June 23rd, 2009 // 1 Comment » // default

This caught my attention circulating around… thought I’d share the thought…

In all the prevailing anarchy, chaos, instability and bombings, eleven men in green bring home a cup.

A cup unexpected, a cup to be welcomed with nothing but tears, countless tears to welcome a good news, finally.

Time for the world to know that we are not just terrorists, don’t just blast bombs: we hit sixes, we crash the stumps, we thrash the whole world down, we are the world champions.

The green flag is high. It’s not just a cup, it’s a statement to everyone that PAKISTAN STILL ROCKS!
